IFBL Certified Private Banker

Introduction

In the wake of heightened competitivity, and the increased complexity of the regulatory environment, a need for qualifying structured professional training programmes has emerged. Wealth Management in Luxembourg, if it is to retain its success and expand, must therefore answer to a number of international criteria as well as meet the specificities of Private Banking in Luxembourg.

For this reason, the IFBL has set up a high-level training programme, with the support of the Private Banking Group, Luxembourg.

Structure and Contents

The complete pathway consists of the following distinctive parts, covering 195 hours:
DIAGNOSTIC PRIVATE BANKING ADVISER (2 HOURS)
After enrolling to the training course the candidate is requested to pass an evaluation of his technical knowledge in different domains and at different levels. This diagnostic is a prerequisite for his admission to the programme. It covers the following subjects:
• Financial knowledge
• Portfolio Management
• Personal loans
• Compliance and professional ethics
• Wealth engineering
Depending on his results a candidate may be invited to a personal interview with the course director before the IFBL informs him whether or not he has the prerequisites to participate in the training programme.
KICK-OFF SESSION (1,5 HOUR)
An information session takes place shortly before the actual beginning of the course in order to brief the participants about the practical and organisational aspects of the training. This debriefing gives the participants the occasion to socialise with their future classmates as well as with the course director and the IFBL staff.
COURSES AND WORKSHOPS (180 HOURS)
The actual training programme consists of 6 tuition blocks:

ICPB Legal & Regulatory Framework

Access to single training units is submitted to a written demand.

Knowledge Transfer Workshops

The participants will be coached by experienced Senior Private Bankers and will be guided through practical issues pertaining to their daily work experience.

Audience and objectives

Target audience

Relationship Managers with 3 to 5 years of experience in Private Banking. Upon registration, candidates are required to indicate information about their educational background and their work experience. Admittance to the programme will be granted on the basis of the information provided and of the results achieved in a written diagnostic meant to assess their technical knowledge. These results may eventually lead to an interview with the course director before the candidate is given a definite recommendation.

In order to ensure an optimal teaching environment, the number of participants is limited to 25 per session.

Objectives

The purpose of this high-level training programme is to enhance the technical expertise of the participants in their function as relationship managers and client advisors and to provide a professional qualification in this field. The programme focuses on the Luxembourg legal and fiscal environment and grants a particular importance to all the practical skills which are essential for establishing a fruitful and long-lasting relationship with a wealthy private banking clientele.

Examinations

Written Examinations

4 out of the 6 tuition blocks prepare for a written examination:

  • Legal an Regulatory Framework (3 hours)
  • Portfolio Management (1.5 hours)
  • Wealth Management (2 hours)
  • Alternative Investments (1 hour)

Oral assessment

Participants, after having successfully passed the examinations of all the 4 tuition blocks, well performed in all the Knowledge Transfer workshops and attended the Interpersonal Skills course may apply to sit the final assessment.
The final assessment consists of an oral examination in front of a jury. It is based upon a case study handed out to assessment candidates a few weeks prior to their examination. The jury assesses whether or not a candidate possesses the knowledge, the attitude and the professionalism to be granted the qualification of “Certified Private Banker”.
If the jury is not satisfied with a candidate’s performance he may be granted a second chance by presenting another case study during a new session to take place within 3 weeks after announcing the results.
Candidates having successfully passed the assessment will be granted the “IFBL Certified Private Banker Diploma”.
